Gilligan: Hiya, Professor. What are you doing?
Professor: I’m making notes for a book. It’s to be a chronicle of our adventures on the island… I think it’s a book people will want to buy, don’t you?
Gilligan: Sure, I’ll buy one. I’m dying to find out what happens to us.
Island survival can mean a lot of things to different people. To the crew and passengers of the SS Minnow, it meant a “three hour tour” followed by being shipwrecked and the ensuing shenanigans as they attempted to be rescued. To some it may mean knowing how to fire up the generator. To others, it may mean having an emergency stash of Cruzan Rum, flashlights, batteries and cans of soup.
There are two special places on island where tourists and locals visit to learn island survival: how to live off of the island the way our Crucian ancestors did.
Mount Victory Camp
Mount Victory Camp is currently hosting a one-week intensive with Tom McElroy of Wild Survival Skills. The course, called Island Survival, spends three days teaching survival skills, like fire techniques, traps, water purification, net weaving, spear fishing, pottery, basket weaving and edible/medicinal plants of the islands, and then puts those skills to use with four days spent in the St. Croix bush. Mt. Victory Camp also offers a variety of workshops and courses, including basket weaving, wild edible and medicinal plants, pottery, rope and cord making, and tool making.
Ridge to Reef Farm
Ridge to Reef Farm is offering their Bush Skills Rendezvous March 1-4, 2018. Participants can expect hands-on learning about how to survive and thrive in the bush. Those interested in learning island survival skills are invited to attend for one day or the entire long weekend. Workshops include natural crafts, survival techniques, wild crafting, organic farming, and outdoor cooking with farm fresh foods.
Whether your idea of survival is more along the lines of Mr. and Mrs. Howell, Gilligan or Professor, St. Croix has something for all levels of adventure. And let’s hope your vacation is by choice and not due to the same circumstances of Skipper and Gilligan!
